EviKon Off-Gassing Detector -
Intelligent Thermal Runaway Detection

EviKon Off-Gassing Detector
The EviKon Off-Gassing Detector is a maintenance free detector with a long lifetime that was specifically designed to increase
safety and reduce costs of ownership in such applications as:
◾ Battery energy storage systems (BESS)
◾ Data centers and UPS rooms
◾ EV charging infrastructure
◾ Battery manufacturing facilities
E2673 detects H2 and VOCs (electrolyte vapours, including DEC and DEMC) to provide early
detection of battery thermal runaway and off-gassing that mitigates risks associated with lithium-ion
battery failures.
In addition, the product measures relative humidity and ambient temperature helping local systems tokeep these parameters on acceptable levels reducing risks of electrostatic discharge, short circuits
and equipment overheating.
Having RS485 Modbus RTU communication protocol and three relay outputs for alarms and fault
signaling, the product ensures flexibility and seamless compatibility with most of the fire safety and
SCADA systems.
The compact form factor allows installation even in space-constrained BESS and data centers battery racks.

What Happens During Lithium Battery Failure?
Stages of Failure
-
Cell damage or defect
-
Electrolyte decomposition
-
Gas generation (off-gassing phase)
-
Thermal runaway
-
Fire or explosion
The Off-Gassing Phase – The Critical Window
Before flames or smoke appear, cells emit:
-
Hydrogen (H₂)
-
Carbon monoxide (CO)
-
Carbon dioxide (CO₂)
-
Methane
-
Ethylene
-
VOC vapors
Hydrogen is often one of the earliest measurable gases.
This stage can provide minutes of warning — if monitored.
What Gases Are Emitted During Lithium Battery Off-Gassing?
These are the earliest detectable indicators:
-
Hydrogen (H₂) ✅
-
Carbon monoxide (CO)
-
Carbon dioxide (CO₂)
-
Methane (CH₄)
-
Ethylene (C₂H₄)
-
Propylene (C₃H₆)
-
Other VOCs (volatile organic compounds)
-
Small amounts of electrolyte vapors (organic carbonates)
Hydrogen is usually one of the earliest and most reliable indicators.
During Thermal Runaway
If the event escalates:
-
Large volumes of Hydrogen
-
Carbon monoxide
-
Hydrocarbons
-
Hydrogen fluoride (HF) ⚠️ (very dangerous, toxic, corrosive)
-
Smoke and particulate matter
-
Combustible gas mixture capable of explosion
What Does the Evikon E2673 Detect?
-
Hydrogen (H₂) via thermal conductivity sensor
-
VOC index (0–500 VOC index) via MOS sensor
-
Humidity & Temperature
Detection range:
-
0…50 / 0…100 %LEL H₂
VOC index 0…500
Does Hydrogen + VOC Detection Cover Lithium Off-Gassing?
YES — for early detection strategy.
Hydrogen + VOC monitoring is currently considered industry best practice for:
-
Early cell failure detection
-
Pre-thermal runaway warning
-
Preventing deflagration in enclosed battery rooms
Most BESS off-gas detection systems rely primarily on:
-
Hydrogen
-
Hydrocarbon / VOC presence
